How to Create Space for Real Commitment

Consider for a moment, the difference between doing something because you "have to" versus because you "want to". Think about showing up for your team or family because you want to and you choose them versus because you have to.

I get a lot of pushback on this when I am speaking with leadership teams. "Matt, there are things I have to do!" No there aren't.

There is nothing you have to do. Nothing you need to do. And definitely nothing that you should do.

Thinking and speaking in this way has us operating from a place of pressure...almost a form of self inflicted compliance.

You can choose today to embrace this belief and shift your language.

I can > I have to

I want > I need to

I would love to > I should

Two things of note:

  1. Stop saying yes to things you have no real desire to commit to.

  2. Start approaching the things you have committed to powerfully because you want to.

Small distinction = Massive difference

This is how you create space for yourself to get committed for reals.

AND check this out...you take the same approach with other people. There is nothing your spouse has to do. There is nothing your kids need to do. There is nothing your team should do.

There is only what they can and want to do.

Be the kind of leader that creates space and commitment.

Today is the day.

You got this!
